Shaggy here, to give a much-needed update on this whole Orochi business. And to let people that discover this blog know what's up with it.
I am not scanlating anymore. I ran into a speedbump with Orochi and could not finish it. I waited, then lost faith in the project, then lost interest. It's not really anyone's fault; things like this just happen. The scans for the last bit of the series were not readily available, so the translator, molokidan, could not produce a translation, and I of course could not scanlate anything, and now here we are, four and a half years later, with nothing more to show. Sorry about that.
Currently, I am unable to scanlate. I recently moved to a new state, I do not own a scanner, and I am out of practice with scanlating and do not have a ton of free time to devote to it. So, even if scans of the fourth volume are found (or made, by someone buying the book and scanning it themselves), I would be unable to work on the project, at least if it needed to be done in less than six months. That is why I am hereby handing the reins over to anyone who wants to take them. As a matter of fact, I am only writing this because <a href="https://www.blogger.com/profile/01470319304076661234">The Legend Master</a> sent me an email asking about the series, asking if he could take over. I am all for it. Anyone can, really, because like I said, I cannot work on the series right now. The problem is, any person that wants to work on Orochi will have to find the materials for themselves.
You can find some info in the previous posts here, but I will include some of it here: There are four kanzenban (really big volumes) of Orochi. The first three have been scanlated, so only the fourth and final book is left. [Ju-Ni] Vicissitude was the original scanner of the series and may or may not have access to the fourth volume. molokidan was the original translator for the first three volumes and may or may not be able to translate the fourth volume if scans are found/made. You can try contacting either of them, but I have not spoken to either in years and do not know what they have been up to. And I doubt either would remember me too well, since I only had a little bit of contact, concerning only this single, mostly-unknown series.
Also, it seems that the download links have been deleted. Unfortunately, I cannot reupload the chapters because my computer died a while back, and I lost all of my copies. They can be found on various manga-reading sites, I am sure, but I would appreciate it if someone with original copies could upload them on Mediafire and send me the links. I am proud of the work I did on Orochi and would like to have the chapters.
Thank you, everyone that has read my work on Orochi! I hope you enjoyed it, and remember - I just did grunt work. Kazuo Umezu wrote and drew this series, and molokidan translated it so we English speakers could read it. They deserve far more praise than I. If anyone can continue and finish this series, please let me know, so I can read the rest of it! And if I can help, send me an email or leave a comment. I promise I will check more often than I have over the past few years, heehee.
Hope you have lots of nightmares!ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-59869078769884999032010-05-15T21:10:00.004-05:002010-05-17T21:57:48.274-05:00Orochi Chapter 7 (Manga Release)<p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_kkMSeYJsjRFTLyMPaTQlBJs_GHfSRYf5C03AeUz0uTArJHpPhU0uN-JcMMRL4ZqmIaDZxFOxdOlF4VSeKruQJB19kfdub7t60dQrjolLg7BT6HCJ9n_OzWwTBqFaMn3HUNmZ-fRnEWDL/s1600/orochi-vol03-133.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_kkMSeYJsjRFTLyMPaTQlBJs_GHfSRYf5C03AeUz0uTArJHpPhU0uN-JcMMRL4ZqmIaDZxFOxdOlF4VSeKruQJB19kfdub7t60dQrjolLg7BT6HCJ9n_OzWwTBqFaMn3HUNmZ-fRnEWDL/s320/orochi-vol03-133.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471684974216226882" /></a></p><br />It's finally here! The second and final chapter of the third kanzenban of <em>Orochi</em>!! "Battle" tells the story of a young boy and his father. I can't go into it too much without giving stuff away, but it was well worth the wait.<br /><br />I know Japan has made movie versions of a few horror manga titles (including a few <em>Tomie</em> movies based on Junji Ito's character as well as Umezu's own <em>The Drifting Classroom</em>), but I wonder if anybody over there has ever thought of making this into a movie. If they haven't, they really should. It wouldn't really be a horror movie, more drama with some very startling things, but it would be damn good.<br /><br />Anyways, get ready for an incredibly long story that will (hopefully) give you a lot to think about. And a lot to shiver with horror at.<br /><br />Best-quality (leveled and small file size; done by Anethum graveoles):<br /><a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?ynwthn1meod">http://www.mediafire.com/?ynwthn1meod</a><br /><br />Low-quality:<br /><a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?myzezjgtxzn">http://www.mediafire.com/?myzezjgtxzn</a><br /><a href="http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZBVDIGET">http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZBVDIGET</a><br /><br />High-quality:<br /><a href="http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RWGHHYHH">http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RWGHHYHH</a><br />(Only Megaupload because it is 280 MB)<br /><br />Also, some news about the future of <span style="font-style:italic;">Orochi</span> - Thanks to a bit of info from NymphStealer (part of KuroKishakai, who did the first chapter of <span style="font-style:italic;">Orochi</span> and half of the second chapter), I asked the person that had scanned the first three volumes of the series, [Ju-Ni] Vicissitude, if he had the fourth and final volume, and he said that he did! He said that he would scan it, and the trusty translator, molokidan, can get to translating it as soon as the job is done. I can't say when to expect the next chapter, but it should be coming eventually. Just keep checking here for details, as I'll post whenever something becomes concrete. Enjoy the chapter!ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-5132698844133884322010-04-21T18:03:00.002-05:002010-04-21T18:11:15.187-05:00Update on Orochi<p>Yesterday, I got the translation for chapter 7 of <em>Orochi</em> from the translator, molokidan.<em> </em>I've started working on it already, but it'll still be a long time before it's done. This chapter is over 200 pages and will finish the third kanzenban. I haven't read it yet, but molokidan says that he thinks it has the best ending out of all the stories.</p><br /><br />I've got a couple of things on my plate right now, including an upcoming anime convention, and that coupled with the many pages in this chapter means that I definitely won't have the chapter done before the end of the month, but unless something horrible happens, I should have it done by the end of May, probably long before. Look forward to it!ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-32004644476641238662010-04-16T00:41:00.002-05:002010-04-16T01:09:26.335-05:00Midori (1992)<p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu4wJedFiaBtG6V53gyfOokcFXv6ZinwsJXfPdrInZ8bcoq9kpMH94WHs6_VV6ruF7CVjTU-LIp6znEia_KVpLFt6HJCnXXpf_YlWDNN50VjgkuBZsqwh5VtEsrThadWaQFbgwNxpXTX5V/s1600/MidoriDVD.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 223px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu4wJedFiaBtG6V53gyfOokcFXv6ZinwsJXfPdrInZ8bcoq9kpMH94WHs6_VV6ruF7CVjTU-LIp6znEia_KVpLFt6HJCnXXpf_YlWDNN50VjgkuBZsqwh5VtEsrThadWaQFbgwNxpXTX5V/s320/MidoriDVD.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460606548302490322" /></a></p><br />I'm still waiting on the translation of chapter 7 of <em>Orochi</em>, so I figured in the meantime, I'd get back to this blog's original purpose - sharing my opinion of all things horror. This time, the dish is <em>Midori</em>, a rather odd movie. It's based on a manga by Suehiro Maruo and was created by just one guy, Hiroshi Harada. It is also very hard to find, though like (almost) everything else, it can be found on the web.<br /><p>I haven't read much of Maruo's work, only two things making up three volumes: <span style="font-style:italic;">Ultra-Gash Inferno</span>, which I hated because it seemed to be nonsensical and gross simply for the sake of being gross; and <em>The Laughing Vampire</em>, which I enjoyed quite a bit, for reasons I am unsure of. I didn't know how to feel about Maruo's manga after reading those, but watching this movie made up my mind. I may not like all his stuff, but he does deserve to be respected. His work can carry a lot of meaning, if you're willing to look for it. And can get past the graphic depictions of sex and violence.</p><p>Getting back to the movie, <em>Midori </em>tells a simple story. A young girl with nowhere to go has to rely on a stranger's kindness, but she soon learns that he is no friend. Forced into a despicable life, with no signs of happiness, she must live on. I want to say that the overall story doesn't matter, but it does. To really get the points being made, you must look closely at the characters, aside from the story, but at the end, you must also think about everything that has happened, to understand what it means. Part of the reason I like this movie is because it shows you the grotesque images Maruo is known for, while moving along quickly, letting you know that the images are there, but they aren't all. There's more. I personally have made the mistake of assuming that Maruo's work is disgusting for no other reason than to have a disturbing picture, but this movie helped me to realize that while his work does give the people who want such images what they desire, it also says something. He draws the depravity of the human race, details how horrible we can be, establishes that these terrors can be anywhere and everywhere, but acknowledges that it is human nature. These are monsters, but they aren't mythical. They don't hide in caves or come out only once every seven years. They are people.</p><p>This movie is not for everyone, just as Suehiro Maruo's work is not for everyone. If you have a weak stomach, don't watch it. If you aren't going to think about symbolism and possible meanings, don't watch it. But if you want something that will get you thinking (and I'm talking, really fucking hard thinking), and you can stand seeing horrific images, watch this. And hell, if you don't like it, you'll at least be able to say that you watched a really rare and unique movie.</p>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-24960483727506549302010-03-24T14:09:00.006-05:002010-03-24T14:31:02.271-05:00Orochi Chapter 6 (Manga Release)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja4VCV3O_7zYTzqTOBZGRJ-FN-paIfgWehh5Zt4-8cG5U3cGnCwhFTMXkaOtogknypQhaHfFU1x7-l25gWVd1cJLNmzcD7OQcRMlWPcgpgW64hSTDdeIfqmDjKy6PNKTnwC4mpSquYShUL/s1600/orochi-vol03-003.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja4VCV3O_7zYTzqTOBZGRJ-FN-paIfgWehh5Zt4-8cG5U3cGnCwhFTMXkaOtogknypQhaHfFU1x7-l25gWVd1cJLNmzcD7OQcRMlWPcgpgW64hSTDdeIfqmDjKy6PNKTnwC4mpSquYShUL/s320/orochi-vol03-003.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452280396734250994" /></a><br />Here's the first chapter of the third kanzenban of <em>Orochi</em>! In "Stage," a boy suffers a tragedy at a very young age and as a result gives up all TV and music. More than a decade later, he tries to break into show business. Has he forgotten about the misfortune of his youth, or are his intentions more than they seem?<br /><br />I really liked this story, and I think a lot of people will. It's not strictly a horror story, but it's well told and paced excellently.<br /><br />Low-quality:<br /><a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?hmczivyo30z">http://www.mediafire.com/?hmczivyo30z</a><br /><a href="http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YB3BCSPH">http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YB3BCSPH</a><br /><br />High-quality:<br /><a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?lw2z3h2rg2w">http://www.mediafire.com/?lw2z3h2rg2w</a><br /><a href="http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3JBH3JVX">http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3JBH3JVX</a><br /><br />This is the first of the two stories in the third kanzenban, and it is about 130 pages long. The second story is over 200 pages long, so it'll take longer to do. I'll try to get it done before the end of April, so you guys don't have to wait too long for it (and because I'm going to an anime convention at the end of April and don't want a nagging feeling while there). As for what happens after that, I'm going to mess with my scanner, see if I can get it working, and talk to the translator of <em>Orochi </em>, molokidan, to see what he might want to do in the future. I hope you all enjoy Yuuichi's trip to the "Stage!"</p>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-27911157671923646432010-03-16T05:23:00.005-05:002010-03-16T16:18:04.091-05:00Orochi Chapter 5 (Manga Release)<p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMS-LUYCa5PsL9asAGx_3ceOqMVbA1KPKs8IHOAvVUPFFY2xFbDa5-uy9nIg7spwssT_UU9uWW-KdPeeZfOkC1j2cSlk92Fv4DZamQASCsWnpXehaHqfO_ZTbOhvKvrO0JKNfJIZC2Ro3U/s1600-h/orochi-vol02-243.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMS-LUYCa5PsL9asAGx_3ceOqMVbA1KPKs8IHOAvVUPFFY2xFbDa5-uy9nIg7spwssT_UU9uWW-KdPeeZfOkC1j2cSlk92Fv4DZamQASCsWnpXehaHqfO_ZTbOhvKvrO0JKNfJIZC2Ro3U/s320/orochi-vol02-243.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449176179679869458" /></a></p><p>Finally, it's done! It took forever, and I ended up having to do most of the pages <em>twice</em>, but it's finished and here for you to enjoy. In this chapter, a little boy tells a ton of lies. What will he do when he is chased by a murderer and his cries for help elicit only laughs and condemnations?</p><p>I'm 99% sure there is no difference between the high quality and the low quality, but I'm still gonna give you the option of downloading one or the other. Anyways, I'll start figuring stuff out after I finish chapter 6. This one is a lot better than my old one; however, it is very different, and I'm not very used to it. For some odd reason, when I use the paint program (Windows 7, by the way), it makes Anime Ace, the font I've been using, look like complete shit. I have no idea how to make that not happen. Granted, I just started using it, but I don't want to spend a week getting acquainted with the program and trying to figure out how to make Anime Ace look normal. So, I'm going to do chapter 5 in a different font, probably Comic Sans because it doesn't look odd or out of place (and I don't know many fonts). What does this mean to the average reader? Nothing, except that the words in this chapter won't look like the words in the latest chapter of Bleach or Naruto. If I can get Anime Ace to look good, I might go back to it for chapter 6, but I might not. It depends on how I feel about Comic Sans after finishing this chapter.<br /><br />I'm going to try to hurry through this chapter, so I can put it behind me as soon as possible, and not seem like I'm giving up on the project. I can't promise I'll get it done within a week, but I'm sure as hell going to try.<br /><br />Now, here's a page I've been testing on to show how weird Anime Ace looks and what Comic Sans looks like:<br /><br /><a href="http://imagefra.me/view.php?img=/2/3/7/shaggyjebus/f_14yfuqbim4cm_25ecc1d.png&srv=img37" target="_blank"><img src="http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/2/3/7/shaggyjebus/t_14yfuqbim4cm_25ecc1d.png" border="0" alt="Image Hosting by imagefra.me" /></a>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-18238082569177534742010-03-04T20:03:00.001-06:002010-03-04T20:15:45.896-06:00Bad NewsMy computer died. I am typing this on my Wii with the remote. My arm already hurts. I am looking into getting a new computer, but I will be out of commission for a few days. I'll probably have to redo all of chapter 5, too. I only had 7 pages left. :( So, it won't be released for a while. Sorry, but thems the breaks. I'll try to update this as things progress.<br />PS: Thank God I read Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece this morning. I'm glad I at least didn't put that off.<br />PSS: This took me only 14 minutes with the Wii Remote. That's a damn good time (I think).ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-46377751866874329302010-02-20T21:00:00.004-06:002010-02-20T21:06:42.537-06:00Orochi Chapter 4 (Manga Release)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgArn0xDSAgq60YSc6ekIgeEP9EqioAxpBQvy6pIkRQmZ8jdmN7UX9wXYV0skBj9fx0JtmOA1K96FnhqDcAzJc240dVGlMEvT0wk023cLrJl0Zor-fj9mMFDxW2nqqIHnk9JPDCjH-v7FVk/s1600-h/orochi+chapter+4+preview+2.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 234px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgArn0xDSAgq60YSc6ekIgeEP9EqioAxpBQvy6pIkRQmZ8jdmN7UX9wXYV0skBj9fx0JtmOA1K96FnhqDcAzJc240dVGlMEvT0wk023cLrJl0Zor-fj9mMFDxW2nqqIHnk9JPDCjH-v7FVk/s320/orochi+chapter+4+preview+2.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440526409774385106" /></a>4th chapter of <i>Orochi</i> - "Hometown." The first of many to come, hopefully.<div><br /></div><div>This is the second chapter from the first kanzenban volume of <i>Orochi</i>, by Kazuo Umezu. (A kanzenban is like an ultimate volume - really big.) This completes the volume. The first 90 pages or so were done by a group called <a href="http://kurokishakai.blogspot.com/">[Kurokishakai]</a>. Much thanks goes to the group, who also did the first chapter of <i>Orochi</i>. You can find that on their blog.</div><div><br /></div><div>The chapters of <i>Orochi</i> are separate tales, connected only by the existence of a strange girl named Orochi. You absolutely do not need to read the first story to understand the second. This chapter is titled "Bones" and is about a woman with a bad childhood, her husband, and a spell gone wrong.</div><div><br /></div><div>After I finished the chapter, I saw that it was over 180MB, so I saved the files as JPEGs to reduce their size. The result was two versions of the chapter, with one of slightly less quality. Both are easy to read though. And it is 215-pages long, so 180MB isn't too crazy a number. Anyways, here are the download links.</div><div><br /></div><div><div>Low-quality:</div><div><a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?g1xnrammznj">http://www.mediafire.com/?g1xnrammznj</a></div><div><a href="http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G6JHKPF6">http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G6JHKPF6</a></div><div><br /></div><div>High-quality:</div><div><a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?kmavefdokmt">http://www.mediafire.com/?kmavefdokmt</a></div><div><a href="http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0ZCKNT61">http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0ZCKNT61</a></div><div><br /></div><div>Big thanks goes to molokidan for translating this and again, [Kurokishakai] for starting this. Amazing.<div><br /></div><div>Two things - 1) I got my first follower. Hi, horrorfangirl! It's great to know someone may really be reading these entries. 2) I've started a makeshift scanlation team, if you can call it that. On <a href="http://mangahelpers.com/">MangaHelpers</a>, I found that someone had translated a bunch of stuff by Kazuo Umezu, a very famous (in Japan, at least) horror manga author, and no one had scanlated it. In other words, no one took the translations and put them on the pages so English-speaking people could read it. I decided that, since I have nothing but free time and love horror manga, I would do it.</div><div><br /></div><div>I decided to start with <i>Orochi</i>, a series that had been started by a group last year but never finished. In fact, they only released one chapter and did half of another. About four days ago, I started scanlating the second chapter, where the other group left off. It's a lot of work, because the chapter is over 200 pages long. Thankfully, the other group did about 90 pages, so that saves me quite a bit of work. I've halfway through the rest of the chapter right now. It shouldn't take me more than a week to finish it.</div><div><br /></div><div>I have some experience doing this sort of thing, but I'm no expert. I can't make the pages look great, but my goal is to get it out there, so other fans can read and enjoy it. There's a lack of Umezu in English, and that's a shame because he is a big name that's influenced a lot of people. I may not do a perfect job, but I'll at least get it out there. Here's a taste of the chapter (and my work):</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family:Arial;font-size:13px;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span><a href="http://imagefra.me/view.php?img=/2/2/2/shaggyjebus/f_10pb5b53v0em_4d50755.png&srv=img37" target="_blank"><img src="http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/2/2/2/shaggyjebus/t_10pb5b53v0em_4d50755.png" border="0" alt="Image Hosting by imagefra.me" /></a><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span><a href="http://imagefra.me/view.php?img=/2/2/2/shaggyjebus/f_10pb5b53v0em_9626c1e.png&srv=img37" target="_blank"><img src="http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/2/2/2/shaggyjebus/t_10pb5b53v0em_9626c1e.png" border="0" alt="Image Hosting by imagefra.me" /></a><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span><a href="http://imagefra.me/view.php?img=/2/2/2/shaggyjebus/f_10pb5b53v0em_f42dda5.png&srv=img37" target="_blank"><img src="http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/2/2/2/shaggyjebus/t_10pb5b53v0em_f42dda5.png" border="0" alt="Image Hosting by imagefra.me" /></a></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Arial, serif;font-size:100%;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;font-size:13px;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Arial, serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: normal; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 0px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 0px; font-family:Georgia, serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">I'm not really sure what to do once I finish it, but I'll deal with that once I'm done. Each chapter is very short, some of them only being two pages long. This greatly helps it. Each story jumps right into the freaky thing. There's no continuity to worry about and no characters to keep up with. Just weird shit that will creep you out.</div><div><br /></div><div>Since the stories are based on Japanese stories, not all of them will make sense, and the ones that do make sense to an English-language reader probably won't hold the significance that they would to a Japanese reader. But I think that's a good thing. If someone tries to tell me about Bloody Mary, I scoff, because I've heard it before. I imagine that's how a Japanese person would react to some of these stories. "Kids on a sign come to life and cause a car wreck? Heard it - it's not true." But non-Japanese people won't know the stories and will be amazed at them. "A human-like lizard crawling across the top of a skyscraper? Damn, that's scary."</div><div><br /></div><div>Also, because there are so many stories, you're sure to find something you like, something that unsettles you. Always been afraid of ghosts? Got it. Monster babies? Got it. Strange attackers that defy reason? Got it. And the art fits it all perfectly. It's simple but can be very detailed. It's like it lulls you into a sense of peace, right before it throws some horrifying thing at you.</div><div><br /></div><div>This series has not been licensed or released in English (which makes sense as the stories are about Japanese urban legends), but it has been scanlated into English and posted across the internet. It's not hard to find, and I highly recommend it.</div><div><br /></div><div>Note: There is a <i>Fuan no Tane + (Plus)</i> that has more stories, but only four chapters of it have been scanlated, due to bad raws.</div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-3144257861694003742010-01-17T10:05:00.005-06:002010-01-17T10:47:56.616-06:00Ghoulies (1985) & Miner's Massacre (2002)<div>Two movies in this post because neither one is worthy of a full post.</div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwkylE7c4Kn31LB3T846eukfIgl-hvgNKgEKLeqzsZnUBNbGoO1qWTEcVUueBfg-mNPJIXVa3QKhjILiFSrFCD0uwgQ-DN_93ggV4htYx9AnxhDIghQDW1s4Q0M5G9PxXbCkqUMawU4xwo/s1600-h/ghoulies.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 270px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwkylE7c4Kn31LB3T846eukfIgl-hvgNKgEKLeqzsZnUBNbGoO1qWTEcVUueBfg-mNPJIXVa3QKhjILiFSrFCD0uwgQ-DN_93ggV4htYx9AnxhDIghQDW1s4Q0M5G9PxXbCkqUMawU4xwo/s320/ghoulies.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427744979927645666" /></a><i>Ghoulies</i> has a very misleading title. It makes you think you're going to see little creatures running around and causes havoc, but really, what you see is a story imitating a Lovecraft imitation. Some guy inherits a mansion, and while he's exploring it, he feels the need to practice black magic, because his dad was a great magician or something. Bad shit happens, and the ghoulies spend about <i>ten minutes</i> killing his friends. Then, the movie ends with an "OH SHIT!" moment that shows that the creators have a sequel planned. Hope the monsters actually do something in that sequel.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUhivKMpd0SzGkJPJ7VQMLaI4iaHP1D7VoVYoKgURXuU1W40q7PEUPfCJ11x2h3hXNrf3CFTBP1MvC4GlV7olVOm25r_hHYK8djoRA49JQCcl8GNr-2YNmyCIyhhkBc396RENbN42Pgv0_/s1600-h/miners_massacre_200.jpg"></a><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUhivKMpd0SzGkJPJ7VQMLaI4iaHP1D7VoVYoKgURXuU1W40q7PEUPfCJ11x2h3hXNrf3CFTBP1MvC4GlV7olVOm25r_hHYK8djoRA49JQCcl8GNr-2YNmyCIyhhkBc396RENbN42Pgv0_/s1600-h/miners_massacre_200.jpg"><img style="text-align: left;display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 274px; " src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUhivKMpd0SzGkJPJ7VQMLaI4iaHP1D7VoVYoKgURXuU1W40q7PEUPfCJ11x2h3hXNrf3CFTBP1MvC4GlV7olVOm25r_hHYK8djoRA49JQCcl8GNr-2YNmyCIyhhkBc396RENbN42Pgv0_/s320/miners_massacre_200.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427745336131929906" /></a></div><i>Miner's Massacre</i>, also known as <i>Curse of the Forty-Niner</i>, is a ripoff of <i>Leprechaun</i>, except instead of a chatty, sometimes funny little person, we get a silent hulk. When his gold is taken, an angry miner returns from the dead to kill all those who have it. Seriously, it's fucking <i>Leprechaun</i>. Thanks to this series, I looked into IDW and found a treasure trove, some of which I'll hopefully discuss in the future.<div><br /></div><div>The series takes stories by noted horror authors and illustrates them. Each issue has four illustrated stories, based on works by four authors (each author has one story in each issue). There's Robert Bloch, who deserves more recognition than he gets, seeing as he wrote the famous book <i>Psycho</i> on which the movie is based; F. Paul Wilson, who's best known for his Repairman Jack character; David J. Schow, well-known in the splatterpunk genre; and Richard Matheson, author of the often-filmed <i>I Am Legend</i>. The average person will probably have only heard of one of those authors (I admit I didn't know any but Matheson before picking up the comic), but after reading these comics, every horror fan should want to seek out all they can find by any of them. (Or at the least, three out of the four.) The stories give you a taste of what horror fiction that isn't King or Rice is like, while providing good art that enhances the stories. As is common for IDW, the art isn't typical; it can look uneven and messy, but it parallels the stories, which feature humans, and the world itself, as an uneven and strange and hostile place.</div><div><br /></div><div>There's also more to these comics than just the stories. Within each issue is something about the four authors, lengthy reads that provide insight to the minds of the writers and the horror genre itself. Furthermore, there are short stories (just text, no pictures) that give you even more to read. Each issue will take a few hours to get through, making it well worth the money spent.</div><div><br /></div><div>If you see <i>Doomed</i> somewhere, grab it. If you don't know much beyond mainstream horror, it'll teach you a lot, and if do know more, you'll be pleased to see these authors getting the attention they deserve. </div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-56990159265345458422010-01-09T10:14:00.004-06:002010-01-11T08:58:18.452-06:00Mister Frost (1990)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNbHxr4gX_CD-j_gcdeCO9PsVyg4u4oU8z4vTQAoO5TnebIk2RQB9rlfYv5S9B1a9f9yW07mhmCUnfUaIXSisstV8zb59i5stqv82GXTqVWIe4FFseRa_3jI_aUEyjXojgz9OAYg-8vI9l/s1600-h/mrfrost2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 188px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNbHxr4gX_CD-j_gcdeCO9PsVyg4u4oU8z4vTQAoO5TnebIk2RQB9rlfYv5S9B1a9f9yW07mhmCUnfUaIXSisstV8zb59i5stqv82GXTqVWIe4FFseRa_3jI_aUEyjXojgz9OAYg-8vI9l/s320/mrfrost2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424775222533945634" /></a>I found this movie while going through Comcast's many free On-Demand movies. I had never heard of it before, but it starred Jeff Goldblum and was about the devil, so I figured I'd give it a shot. What I got was an above-average horror movie, which unfortunately makes for only an average movie, independent of genres. <div><br /></div><div>That is more a critique of horror movies as a whole than praise for <i>Mister Frost</i>. No, this movie doesn't deserve praise. It's simply better than a lot of the other crap that's out there.</div><div><br /></div><div>Jeff Goldblum plays a mass murderer that claims to be the devil. He admits to having a dead body on the premises when a police inspector shows up one day and offers no resistance whatsoever as the police dig up his yard and find the many corpses. He is smug, as if he is untouchable. This is pleasant for the first half of the movie, as we see him interact with the other characters, but as the film goes on, and the mystery and intrigue fade, it becomes boring. Goldblum, as the devil, does nothing himself but sit and talk, and he only talks to one person, a female psychiatrist will who supposedly help him regain his grasp on the world. The movie makes up for this by having a lot of things happen, interrupting the many conversations between Goldblum and the doctor, but once everything is out of the bag, and it's clear what's going to happen, you just don't care. All interest is lost, because even the plights of the other characters mean nothing. It all goes back to the devil and the doctor, and there's no suspense there.</div><div><br /></div><div>However, like I said, this is an above-average horror movie. The first half of it is really good. If you get bored after forty minutes, turn it off and make up your own conclusion. It'll probably be better than the actual end of the movie.</div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-90796294987435996742010-01-06T23:59:00.002-06:002010-01-07T00:54:02.615-06:00Neglected No MoreGod, it's been a while since I've posted here. I'd feel bad about that, if anybody read this. But maybe people will actually read it now, since I've decided to start linking to it as I make my various journeys across the internet.<div><br /></div><div>I haven't stopped loving horror, of course, but I did take a break for about a month and a half. In October, I decided that I wanted to watch one horror movie a day (or average that, at least), and I accomplished that goal. Unfortunately, a lot of the movies I saw were crap. (Thanks, FEARnet!) Thanks to that, I got sick of watching horror movies. Even though I tried to go in with no expectations whatsoever, I still ended disappointed, and often yawning before the movie had even reached the halfway point. So, in October, I watched thirty-one movies, and in November and December combined, I watched six. Bad way to end the year.</div><div><br /></div><div>I went on a horror comic binge for a while, reading some very good things that I hope to eventually share here, but I got tired of that before too long. I live my life in waves, it seems. Something will intensely hold my interest for a while, but then the tide will pull back, and I'll move on. But the tide always returns, and with it, my devotion. Really, all I can hope to do is not let years go by before I let the tide of horror wash over me again.</div><div><br /></div><div>My love was rekindled recently by new horror manga translations, thanks to a fellow named <a href="http://www.daniel-lau.com/">Daniel Lau</a>. He scanlated some Junji Ito stuff, and I lapped it up. I've found a fair bit of horror manga out there, but none of it has struck me the way Ito's stuff has. (Except for <i>Fuan no Tane</i>, but there isn't a lot of that, and the author's other works aren't horror.) There's a lot of Ito stuff that isn't available in English, and it looks like Mr. Lau is the best shot we have of getting it.</div><div><br /></div><div>Inspired by Ito's gruesome work, I've started watching horror movies again, and I'm planning to start reading the horror comics I've had on my computer for the past couple of months. I'm jumping back into the pit. I'll share my thoughts here, so people with similar tastes can be satiated and not have to go through the trouble I do.</div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-91845199372933360892009-11-07T04:37:00.003-06:002009-11-07T04:59:41.598-06:00Them (2006)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-xNN6tKLLIKgvfPNgyo4wHqV-7zGds0eIAumWwoKEFmSfupSDvfh-naxFF3rTlR9E7sGVioIcxdYqwhyphenhyphenI5B8ffJf4mTCLe0UujnnsFnQfKxLKhZ2wFZvnsbtcSO8BtwQqP8YqObNMGwwZ/s1600-h/them+uk.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-xNN6tKLLIKgvfPNgyo4wHqV-7zGds0eIAumWwoKEFmSfupSDvfh-naxFF3rTlR9E7sGVioIcxdYqwhyphenhyphenI5B8ffJf4mTCLe0UujnnsFnQfKxLKhZ2wFZvnsbtcSO8BtwQqP8YqObNMGwwZ/s320/them+uk.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401309331506040866" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Them</span> (also know as <span style="font-style:italic;">Ils</span>) is a French film about a couple terrorized by strange people. This has been seen in <i>Funny Games</i> and <i>The Strangers</i>, but what sets this movie apart is that it does things right.<div><br /></div><div>First, we do not see the attackers. For a long time, we don't see them at all, which makes you wonder if this isn't a movie about ghosts terrorizing a couple. When we finally do catch a glimpse, we only see their feet. This lets the viewer come up with his/her own idea of who the attackers are. It's been said so many times, because it's true - what you don't see is scarier than what you do. <i>Funny Games</i> and <i>The Strangers</i> lack a lot of suspense because you constantly see the attackers and know what they're doing. In <i>Them</i>, you don't see them, so you don't know if they're right outside the door, downstairs, or already in the room. You don't know what weapons they have, so you feel more tense, because they could be unarmed and easy to take down, or they could be packing some serious heat, and going head-on against them could result in immediate death.</div><div><br /></div><div>Second, the characters act like real people. No stupid decisions that no person could make, even if they were scared to death. And no superhuman shit that tips in the odds in their favor by throwing rationale out the window. The man and woman act the way any person would, and that means they take some damage but aren't sitting sheep the entire time.</div><div><br /></div><div>Finally, the movie is short, which I've found to be a blessing with most horror movies. Coming in at about an hour and fifteen minutes, <i>Them</i> accomplishes what it set out to do, spook the audience, without a bunch of useless scenes that explain that the woman has issues with her mother or that the couple is on the rocks or anything else that doesn't matter. The couple is being chased in their own home late at night; that is enough to make us sympathize with them and feel the terror they feel. Too many horror movies try to skim over the horror in favor of characterization (despite usually lacking the ability to proper characterize). <i>Them</i> says, "Fuck characterization! We're going to focus on making you sit on the edge of your seat." Good choice.</div><div><br /></div><div>This movie won't be great for repeat viewings, but that could be said of at least 90% of horror all movies. The fact that it's good enough to watch once sets up above most of the crap that floods the genre. That said, it is worth showing to your friends, so I can understand buying it. Just make sure you have a lot of friends.</div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-48052852698311154242009-10-18T02:45:00.004-05:002009-10-18T03:13:56.794-05:00Pieces of ShitI've been neglecting this lately, and that's too bad, but I have not stopped loving all things horror. I've just loathed the thought of trying to come up with a decent review to put here. So, from now on, to keep me writing something, I won't be posting full reviews of movies. Instead, I'll be posting snippets about what I've watched and what I think about it. Simple, informal, and probably not helpful to anyone, but it's something.<br /><br />Now, I will talk about some movies that I have watched recently that are horrible and should not be viewed by anyone.<br /><br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nun_(2005_film)">The Nun</a><br />The ghost of a nun returns 18 years later to take revenge on the students who killed here. It's boring, long, and the twist at the end is ridiculously stupid and nonsensical.<br /><br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prom_Night_(2008_film)">Prom Night (2008)</a><br />Killer teacher breaks out of the nuthouse to be with the student he is obsessed with, killing all who stand in his way. Predictable, unoriginal, and rated PG-13, which means no tits or gore. Completely worthless. One of the worst ways to spend an hour and a half. Also, nothing like the original.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0818516/"> Resurrection Mary (2005)</a><br />Man afraid of marriage has an almost-affair with a girl who turns out to be a ghost, and bad shit happens. Stupid plot that betrays the legend of Resurrection Mary by turning her into a killer. Could have been a good ghost story but instead is a slasher-esque pile of crap.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107084/"> The Harvest</a><br />Writer goes to Mexico to learn about a murder, meets a woman, gets his kidney stolen, and that's about it. A thriller that doesn't thrill at all. It takes forever for something to happen, and when something does finally happen, it isn't satisfying at all. Furthermore, the twist right before the end of the movie is dumb and shows just how bad an idea this movie was. The twist at the very end of the movie is good, but it's not worth watching the whole fucking thing.ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-46212299880791920982009-09-07T00:38:00.003-05:002009-09-07T00:59:19.736-05:00Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgovT7O9NZ74IlUblCLQLtEFlQVbAvBI9KlPBJJm66aDgTMjNUwVsQcEnWm6RxtjDiY4NdN-jHjhEK8XAbsI3B93bQvRAmvUcSB5he99S33RwiCKpOPBxneo_CUwSOZmtxOzM1g7jr3ziMc/s1600-h/Behind_the_mask_ver2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 217px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgovT7O9NZ74IlUblCLQLtEFlQVbAvBI9KlPBJJm66aDgTMjNUwVsQcEnWm6RxtjDiY4NdN-jHjhEK8XAbsI3B93bQvRAmvUcSB5he99S33RwiCKpOPBxneo_CUwSOZmtxOzM1g7jr3ziMc/s320/Behind_the_mask_ver2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378595971757145810" /></a>First, it needs to be said that if you hate slashers, you probably shouldn't watch this movie. It's just not for you.<div><br /></div><div><i>Behind the Mask</i> is like two movies. The first half of it is a mockumentary, with a journalist following a man who aspires to be a serial killer like Jason, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger (who exist in the world of the movie as real killers, not movie icons). This half has a good bit of comedy and pokes fun at slasher films, with the namesake of the film, Leslie, explaining how he carefully scoped out a girl to be his "survivor" and set up things in and around the house (where the killings will take place) to ensure that no one gets alive. It suggests that the actions of the supernatural killers are planned ahead with great thought and not done spur the moment. It is a business, and it takes a lot of work. This is very enjoyable, especially for those who have seen a lot of slasher movies.</div><div><br /></div><div>The second half, however, is like a regular movie. A regular slasher, at that. There are one or two surprises, but they're very predictable and not surprising at all. Nothing great happens, and there isn't even any gore to spice things up. People get hit quickly and die quickly. This half is boring and should have been left on the cutting room floor. Sure, the movie wouldn't have made a lot of sense, but it would have been a better movie. The second half is exactly what was being made fun of in the first half, a generic slasher. It's a shame.</div><div><br /></div><div>I want to recommend this movie, but I also want to say that you should fast-forward when the camera crew puts down their cameras and things get <i>real</i>. That way, you'll get to see what happens, and you won't have to waste forty minutes watching the same drivel you've already seen in a million other movies.</div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-15489095548355383192009-09-06T03:44:00.004-05:002009-10-18T03:14:51.739-05:00Funny Games (2008)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Z56JX2zXETR3s2RL-_XI3Gxr78UNv2PfjQB6VmsAhyphenhyphenCC-Ti2hcIoN35CjhQG_KdVyRPZ3QT4b_broog_Z9ikF5JSTbPJBVbfBrK8BnqvvJ73ZmeqUlCItuhiYhEK7q_iB1AQT8B8nyEN/s1600-h/poster_funny_games_ver2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Z56JX2zXETR3s2RL-_XI3Gxr78UNv2PfjQB6VmsAhyphenhyphenCC-Ti2hcIoN35CjhQG_KdVyRPZ3QT4b_broog_Z9ikF5JSTbPJBVbfBrK8BnqvvJ73ZmeqUlCItuhiYhEK7q_iB1AQT8B8nyEN/s320/poster_funny_games_ver2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378273147630293330" /></a>Ever heard of the game <i>Postal 2</i>? In the game, there are very long load times and incredibly annoying music, meant to piss you off. This movie is like <i>Postal 2</i>. Except, in that game, you get to take out your frustrations by killing people. No such luck here. There is no catharsis, no satisfactory ending, nothing at all to make you feel good. It's just a steaming pile of shit.<div><br /></div><div>At first, you can't even tell that this is a horror movie. For a good, long time, nothing happens. You get a feel for the three family members, but mostly, it's just a bunch of shots of them living their normal lives. Then, a young man appears asking for some eggs, and nothing happens for another ten minutes. There's some suspense, because you know this guy is one of the bad guys, because that's what all the trailers say, and that's just how the movie goes, but because you know all this, it's not that satisfying. That, and the fact that it takes forever for something to actually happen. A woman walking into the room where Michael Myers is hiding, that's suspenseful. A shot of the woman reading a magazine for ten minutes while Michael stands in the closet, that's boring.</div><div><br /></div><div>When the movie finally starts up, the response isn't, "Man, this is going to be so cool." Right from the get go, you feel uncomfortable. The violence is real. Too real, as a matter of fact. It's not exaggerated, and the people don't deserve it in the least. It is pure violence for the sake of violence. No laughs. No gory special effects. No way to not take it seriously. It will make you feel like shit. And the violence isn't the only unsavory part of the movie. There are a ton of useless scenes here. For example, there's "watch man blow-dry a cell phone for a full minute" and "exterior of a house during the middle of the night, with indistinct sounds, for thirty seconds." These are pointless and serve no purpose other than to piss off the audience even more.</div><div><br /></div><div>Now, some movies make you feel like shit while watching it, only to make you love them afterwards, because they've said something important or true. This is the case with <i>Requiem for a Dream</i> and <i>Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer</i>. <i>Funny Games</i> is not one of those movies. There is absolutely nothing to learn, no big truths about the world, no redeeming factor of any kind, in this movie. At the end, you will feel like crap, and you will have learned nothing. You'll have wasted an hour and fifty minutes, all for nothing. I wish I had never watched this movie. I wish I had instead spent the time watching reruns of <i>Roseanne</i>. That would have been a better use of my time.</div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-493471187916142702009-08-18T14:15:00.005-05:002009-10-18T03:14:34.630-05:00The Amityville Horror (2005)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwWzdp8onb5IRZgn4NGu2H7zl8y_Q3sPPApLMAj_1YgB6xmWMhcmd0DwZG1-Hu3AVgzTA_lajtdLHaVir9oRmhT2HaqWRI16EFCdy6kkit9A2uv58g_sORbs8b33de-I67nyLy_-zez-yg/s1600-h/amityville_horror.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 217px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwWzdp8onb5IRZgn4NGu2H7zl8y_Q3sPPApLMAj_1YgB6xmWMhcmd0DwZG1-Hu3AVgzTA_lajtdLHaVir9oRmhT2HaqWRI16EFCdy6kkit9A2uv58g_sORbs8b33de-I67nyLy_-zez-yg/s320/amityville_horror.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371384745601601202" /></a>Right off the bat, it needs to be said that this is not like the original <i>Amityville Horror</i> book or movie at all. They should have changed the windows of the house and the surnames of the families and called it <i>The House that Murder Built </i>or <i>Crazy Shit in a Big Ass House.</i><div><i><br /></i></div><div>This movie is enjoyable, in an action movie, the plot doesn't matter one bit, kind of way. There are a lot of creepy things and scares, but none of it is psychological. It's all, "Oh fuck, what the hell is that ugly thing?" But it works on that level (and only that level).</div><div><br /></div><div>It's worth watching if you have time to waste or want some simple chills, but I don't know why anybody would buy this movie.</div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-53811754433508951092009-07-20T22:23:00.004-05:002009-07-20T23:00:20.243-05:00The House on the Borderland (Comic)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifbhl9pTXeUX0mRhWyj40Zd7s-yh_N82x8Y-nBvIGsXRaDTBxr1b0uJwn1sjmLpq-Tz18TQDSXoO88nsd7b0MImfLr9Bl1tk5VeZH0qFXgGaBenFfUNe54d-NvSFw4xAIAxVVTQigW-1Yo/s1600-h/3927_400x600.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifbhl9pTXeUX0mRhWyj40Zd7s-yh_N82x8Y-nBvIGsXRaDTBxr1b0uJwn1sjmLpq-Tz18TQDSXoO88nsd7b0MImfLr9Bl1tk5VeZH0qFXgGaBenFfUNe54d-NvSFw4xAIAxVVTQigW-1Yo/s320/3927_400x600.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360749797765477426" /></a>This comic (or "graphic novel," if you want to be uptight about it) is an adaptation of a 1908 novel written by William Hope Hodgson, a guy I had never heard of before picking this up. That's not surprising, seeing as he is one of many horror authors from the early twentieth century that are now all but unknown. But after reading this, I have a strong desire to hunt down the writings of Hodgson and his horror contemporaries, people who inspired H. P. Lovecraft himself.<div><br /></div><div>The basic story is simple: Two guys walking across Europe run across some ruins near a large pit and find a book detailing the horrors that occured nearby. The nature of the horrors, however, are complex and disturbing. They include dreams that seem to be more real than reality, abominations that humans should never set their eyes upon, and a grand, cosmic evil that wants to use trespassers as a gateway to the human race. As with Lovecraft, you probably won't understand everything, asking questions like "What's so bad about a cloud in the sky?" but that's thinking too much. The point here is to feel the fear that the characters face, that fear of the unknown, of the immutable, of that which cannot be explained or contained. It's scary because it's a person trapped in a house with something that completely transcends humanity. It is madness and insanity. It is what should not be.</div><div><br /></div><div>Since this is a comic book, art is important, and while you might dislike the art at first, after a while, you should realize that the art isn't supposed to be pretty or awe-inspiring. After that, you should like the art just fine. It does a good job of making things feel, well, <i>wrong</i>. The art isn't bad; it's simply not what you usually see in a comic. But this is a horror story, after all. It'd be bad if this looked like an issue of <i>Superman</i> or <i>Captain America</i>. Just go into it not expecting it to look cartooney or completely realistic. (Sorry if that isn't helpful. I'm not a big art person.)</div><div><br /></div><div>I highly recommend this comic. It is a good read that will stay with you, as long as you have an open mind and are willing to think deeply about things. And maybe, it will turn you onto a horror author that most people have forgotten but who does deserve to be recognized.</div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-86906109009590396982009-07-13T14:10:00.004-05:002009-07-13T14:57:40.363-05:00Memories of Murder (2003)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvA9yN-V7EuCEuk8_XynfdoJaJurh7HjahzhqK9OaUriuj6uSEitCSnlCnDp0UekbXG-mTOOzE_JIS8iIBKc0l_vRJnvBHi0InHM134Goxp1w5atxOEZa52DG3jK3Ay5KiRwFKrBzHYoJx/s1600-h/memories_of_murder.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 223px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvA9yN-V7EuCEuk8_XynfdoJaJurh7HjahzhqK9OaUriuj6uSEitCSnlCnDp0UekbXG-mTOOzE_JIS8iIBKc0l_vRJnvBHi0InHM134Goxp1w5atxOEZa52DG3jK3Ay5KiRwFKrBzHYoJx/s320/memories_of_murder.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358025038404095490" /></a>First, I want to say that <i>this is not a horror movie</i>. It is a suspenseful drama that deals with murder. I am talking about it here because I, as a fan of horror, am interested in the subject of murder and enjoy things that deal with murder and serial killers and the like. This movie will not scare you or offer gruesome deaths that titillate; however, it will at times make you hold your breath and wince at the details of the deaths. Very simply - if you want a guy in a mask killing teenagers, this movie isn't for you; but if you like stories involving death and killing, you might enjoy this.<div><br /></div><div><i>Memories of Murder</i> is a 2003 South Korean film that is based on a true story. It starts in 1986 and shows detectives trying to find a serial killer who kills and rapes women on rainy nights. Since this is the 80s, and Korea, the detectives don't have a lot to work with. There's no DNA testing and no long list of possible suspects. Also, some of the detectives are incompetent and try to beat confessions out of innocent people, as if they only care about catching a culprit and not stopping the crimes.</div><div><br /></div><div>The first half of the movie will probably make you laugh a bit. How can you not laugh when a detective stakes out a bathhouse, searching for men with shaved pubes because no pubic hair has been found at any of the crime scenes? But after an hour or so, things change, and there is no humor at all. It's as if the severity of what's been going on hits the director and the audience. No jokes, nothing even slightly humorous - just the cold, hard fact that every time they fail, another woman dies. That is when the movie really gets good (not to say that the first half is bad, just not as good as the second half). The intrigue of the case, the graphic details of the deaths, and the finding of a suspect that has to be guilty, they all lead to a satisfying conclusion that doesn't explain everything but is still a damn good ending. You might not like the facts that come with the ending, but you cannot say anything bad about the way the movie itself ends.</div><div><br /></div><div>Like I said above, if you want a slasher or something gory or horrifying, this isn't the movie to watch. But if you enjoy hearing about murder cases and true crime mysteries, this is a great movie with few flaws.</div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941502820755470503.post-75790289990335286492009-07-08T08:47:00.002-05:002009-07-08T09:14:12.360-05:00Welcome to Shaggy's Horror BlogGreetings. I am Shaggy. I've been a fan of horror since I was a little kid. Before I was even ten years old, I was reading Stephen King books, getting creeped out by Robert Stack's voice on <i>Unsolved Mysteries</i>, and watching every horror movie I could.<div><br /></div><div>Unfortunately, throughout most of high school and my first years of college, my fascination with the macabre was ignored, in favor of pansy shit like feelings and love. But over the past year, I've gotten back in touch with those evil feelings of joy that can only come from seeing a person get shish kabobed in the face. And though the blog market is oversaturated, I have decided to make this blog, so I can have an outlet for my thoughts concerning everything horror. And so I will, hopefully, never again neglect my bloody mistress.</div><div><br /></div><div>I'll be mainly posting reviews of the stuff that I watch and read. All types of movies - slashers, suspense, Asian horror, etc. - as well as books, comics, anime, and manga. Pretty much whatever I can get my hands on. I might even make a post about a Halloween episode of a sitcom.</div><div><br /></div><div>Finally, if you have a suggestion for something I should watch or read, feel free to tell me. I am always looking for new stuff. I'm a pretty open-minded guy, and nice to boot, so never feel like you can't drop me a line, even if it's just to say hi.</div><div><br /></div><div>That's it, boys and ghouls. (God bless you, Crypt Keeper.) The fun will start soon, so don't stay up too late, and remember to always look over your shoulder. Who knows what you might see behind you.</div>ShaggyJebushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11227472495389992543noreply@blogger.com0
