It's finally here! The second and final chapter of the third kanzenban of Orochi!! "Battle" tells the story of a young boy and his father. I can't go into it too much without giving stuff away, but it was well worth the wait.
I know Japan has made movie versions of a few horror manga titles (including a few Tomie movies based on Junji Ito's character as well as Umezu's own The Drifting Classroom), but I wonder if anybody over there has ever thought of making this into a movie. If they haven't, they really should. It wouldn't really be a horror movie, more drama with some very startling things, but it would be damn good.
Anyways, get ready for an incredibly long story that will (hopefully) give you a lot to think about. And a lot to shiver with horror at.

Also, some news about the future of Orochi - Thanks to a bit of info from NymphStealer (part of KuroKishakai, who did the first chapter of Orochi and half of the second chapter), I asked the person that had scanned the first three volumes of the series, [Ju-Ni] Vicissitude, if he had the fourth and final volume, and he said that he did! He said that he would scan it, and the trusty translator, molokidan, can get to translating it as soon as the job is done. I can't say when to expect the next chapter, but it should be coming eventually. Just keep checking here for details, as I'll post whenever something becomes concrete. Enjoy the chapter!

ReplyDeleteAnethum It looks like the differences between LQ and HQ and the LQ is jpg and HQ is png. There could be something more than that since I don't make scans myself so would not know what else to look for and of course did not produce this scan.
I did appreciate the difference levelling make, it is interesting to see how that made a difference to the png file, not being a scanlator I went and looked up about levelling, something useful to know about from the sites I find explaining how to do it.
Thanks so much for your releases of the Orochi series. I have the Viz english-translated graphic novel (I think it's the last volume of the series), and have been hoping to see more of the series. Your work is greatly appreciated :)

ReplyDeleteThere's not much of a difference between the HQ and LQ releases. There used to be (the LQ would look slightly worse), but I'm pretty sure they look the same now. Don't ask me why there was a change. There's even a possibility they never looked any different, and my eyes were just being weird. I keep offering a choice because I figure, why not? The images start out as PNG, and I have to change them to JPEG to lower the file size (or else ostracize a lot of people). I change the files once I've edited the entire chapter, so the PNG version of the chapter already exists.
As for why I don't level, it's very simple - I don't know how. I'm not a "professional" scanlator, nor do I know a lot. Bold declaration of truth here - I do 99% of my work in Paint. (Granted, Windows 7's Paint is pretty nice, but such a thing would be frowned upon by most, hence my hesitation to admit it.) This isn't about doing the best job or even an above average job; it's about doing something no one else has done, in a way that is readable. Speed factors in, too. My process is minimal and allows me to do more than 100 pages in a week. I like that.
ReplyDeleteIn short, I don't know shit about scanlation, except that I am an adequate cleaner and typesetter, and I have a lot of free time and passion. And I'm cool with that, because if I don't do this, no one else will (or so it seems). I don't really want to become fantastic at scanlation, or renowned for what I've done. I just want to give other horror fans more to read.

Orochi is already adapted to a movie, if you don;t know. However they just adapted one chapter. Here is some information. I think you could download it somewhere in the net. About the DVD, I'm not sure, but I haven't found it.

Generally, I do think that many Mangas look great on the PC-Screen. Especially images that have so high contrasts like the ones by Umezu.
The Orochi movie is really bad. I don't recommend it for any reason.
